Found this interesting article from the Economist that suggest maybe one day we will be able to use coffee as a fuel to run our cars. It goes on to discuss coffee-based biodiesel fuel. The biofuel should cost about $1 per gallon to make in a medium-sized installation, the researchers estimates in the article. Any how it certainly is a good read and worth thinking about.

Just came across the National Geographic page dedicated to coffee and it is quite interseting. The site has a history of coffee, descriptions of the different coffee varieties and a map of coffee-producing countries. The also have a page dedicated to different type of roast and a great article by Ethel A. Starbird, entitled: The Bonanza Bean: Coffee.

Must see coffee places in San Francisco Bay area

Tara Duggan from the San Francisco Chronicle did an interesting story complete with a list of coffee places to explore in the San Francisco Bay area from North Beach and Berkeley originals to brand-new coffee companies, and even to restaurants that are becoming more creative with their coffee service. She also gives a brief history of coffee companies in that area.

Kenya coffee websites

I came across two great websites today on Kenya coffee. The first website is the Kenya Coffee Traders Association. They have very accurate information on the Kenyan coffee industry, compiled by active industry participants. They also list a ton of great info including a quarterly newsletter, crop forecasts, statistics, exporters batting list, destinations and monthly reports all updated on a regular basis.

The second site is the Coffee Board of Kenya. They also have a ton of great free information related to the Kenyan coffee industry.

Coffee futures rise as supplies tighten

Coffee future prices rose on speculation that a declining dollar will boost demand as the global bean supplies tighten. The International Coffee Organization said on Tuesday that the global output of coffee will be 127.8 million bags in the year ending Sept. 30, less than last month’s forecast of 133.4 million bags. A coffee bag weighs 60 pounds, or 132 kilograms. Arabica-coffee futures for May delivery rose 1.1 cents, or 1 percent, to $1.0705 a pound on ICE Futures U.S. in New York, the biggest gain for a most-active contract since March 4. The commodity dropped 30 percent in the past year. Raw-coffee shipments by Brazil in the first 10 days of March fell 7.9 percent from a month earlier, according to preliminary figures on the Web site of the nation’s exporter council. Brazil and Colombia are the two biggest producers of arabica beans. Robusta coffee for May delivery rose $3, or 0.2 percent, to $1,439 a metric ton on the Liffe exchange in London.

Coffee may ward off liver disease

A recent article by Heather Maloney, a staff member at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, states that many recent studies have shown that coffee is amazingly protective for the liver. According to the American Liver Foundation, liver diseases (including hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer), affect one out of every 10 Americans. More than 42,000 people die of liver disease every year.

Coffee taster insures tongue for $14 million dollars

Came across this interesting article this afternoon. A man by the name of Gennaro Pelliccia is the chief taster for Costa Coffee and is in charge of tasting every batch of raw coffee beans that Costa Coffee uses. He considers his tongue a valuable asset after 18 years of experience in the industry. So much so that he has had his tongue insured for $14 million in the United Kingdom with Lloyds of London.
